If you have accepted payment from a guest to stay in your home, then you are legally responsible for ensuring that you meet the requirements of Fire Safety Law - just like a hotel or hostel. If you are hosting for free, the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service strongly recommends that you follow the same rules:
For Hosts with paying guests:
Make sure you know your responsibilities and undertake a fire safety risk assessment to keep people staying in your premises safe from fire.
For all Hosts:
Read the Scottish Fire and Rescue Service’s advice on overnight accommodation.
Ensure that you have adequate fire detection and smoke alarms.
Identify escape routes ensuring these are not blocked.
Make sure your property does not become overcrowded.
Don’t overload sockets.
Don’t leave laptops and phones on charge unattended.
Make sure to ask your host about fire safety and ensure that they have adequate smoke alarms and an exit plan.
Remember that the UK emergency services number to call in the event of a fire is 999.
